Sand Tray
Sand tray is an entire therapeutic approach unto itself. As the name suggests, there is a tray, partially filled with sand. The client uses small figures to create a scene or image that symbolically represents the client's inner process.
Typically, there is no interpretation of the image -- the therapist is a witnessing presence, simply there to hold the space. If you've never done it, it doesn't sound very exciting, but it can be a profound experience. It is the symbolic process in its purest form.
With kids, they often do imaginary play in the sand, using the figures as toys. This is a natural process for children -- they naturally express through symbolic play; in fact, this is usually easier for them than talking about their feelings.
I document client's sand trays by taking digital pictures of them, and periodically we'll review the images. It's astonishing how clearly the symbolic process in the sand tray mirrors -- and even anticipates -- the healing and growth in the client's life.
